Guttman scale

A Guttman scale (sometimes also known as a scalogram analysis) consists of a set of dichotomous items with a simple unidimensional cumulative structure: a positive response to a higher item implies the same to all lower items, and individual response patterns interlock to form a joint ordinal scale. Perfect forms rarely occur empirically (except in the cases of social distance and psychosomatic symptoms) and methods exist to obtain a ‘best solution’.
